Captain America: The Winter Soldier smashes box office records to become highest grossing April release of all time with $96m opening weekend

Captain America: The Winter Soldier has smashed records to become the highest grossing film opening in April of all time.

The Disney-Marvel blockbuster, starring Scarlett Johansson and Chris Evans, ploughed through the box office this weekend to make $96.2 million, putting it on track to be the biggest hit outside of summer releases.

The superhero flick walked all over the previous record-holder, Fast Five, which made $86 million in its own April opening weekend back in 2011.

Summer is when the biggest box office hits have their release, so for the Marvel movie to hit such highs in April is a feat.

The last comic book film to enjoy such great success was The Avengers, which made a grand total of $623 million in 2012, and Captain America seems on the road to rival it judging by this latest number collection.

It was clear by Friday that it was going to make waves, with the intake for that day alone hitting $37 million.

Even Thursday night was a hit for the much anticipated movie, which pulled $10.2 million on the mere school night.

According to Dave Hollis, head of worldwide theatrical distribution for Disney, releasing the flick early as opposed to saving it for the summer was a deliberate choice.

'We looked at the possibility of creating separation from the other summer tentpoles,' he said, adding a reference to the fact that they have a second Marvel film coming out at the end of summer - Guardians Of The Galaxy.

Marvel - which was responsible for the Iron Man franchise as well as The Avengers - will surely be celebrating whoever's idea it was to spend $170 million to get the film made.

Chris Evans takes centrestage as Captain America himself - or, Steve Rogers in his everyday life - a war veteran whose physicality is enhanced to the peak of human capacity by a serum used as an experiment on him.

Then there's Samuel L. Jackson who plays Nick Fury, the director of S.H.I.E.L.D., creating a cast more than able to pull eyes to the big screen on their own.
