Friday, October 4th marked an epic musical experience at the Genesis Deluxe Cinema as a host of Nigeria’s most talented entertainers graced the premier of the first episode of Season one of Coke Studio, Africa’s Innovative musical fusion project.
What To Expect From The Coke Studio Season 1: Basically, Coke studio creates an exciting live musical collaboration which entails bringing 24 artistes together from Sub-saharan Africa. Representing Nigeria in a star-studded season 1 are ‘the king of African pop’, King Sunny Ade, hot-shot rapper M.I, sweet-voiced Waje and Bez and Dj Jimmy Jat; Representing Mali is Salif Keita; Representing Kenya are Miss Karun and Just a band. Representing South Africa are Hip hop Pantsul and Tunmi. Representing Central African Republic is BoddhiSatva. Representing Uganda are Joel Sebunjo, Qwela and Lillian Mbabazi. Th innovative show plans to achieve music fusion by bringing together different genres, artistes and types of music from different regions of Africa.
Renowned Artistes like King Sunny Ade chose songs of theirs they want to remake and they team up with collaborating artistes like Temi Dollface, Kenya’s Bamboo, Sage and Dela as well as Kassongo from DRC.
MI’s gave his opinion on the show and according to him, the show is nothing short of an exciting musical adventure. He finds the idea of fusing African music really fascinating and claims it was such an idea that gave him motivation for his hit single African rapper #1. He also sees it as an exciting opportunity to delve into genres of music that are foreign to him like Highlife, Apala, Sakara, Kalangu.
Speaking to one of the brains behind the show, Brand-manager Olufemi Ashipa said, “Coke Studio is taking Nigerian music to an entirely different level and aims to satisfy the desire for something new and different. The music industry in Nigeria has witnessed a surge of talent shows; however Coke Studio is not just a platform but a journey in discovery, bringing Africa together through music”.
Interested? Coke Studio airs in Nigeria on Silverbird Television which consists of 8 separate 45minute shows including a 2hour special on New year’s eve. These shows show exactly everything being said so far- unexpected fusions of different music genres. It also gives viewers a behind-the-scene peek at artistes’ interactions their experiences on set.
